How Sweeps Coins work

1. Two currencies, one account

Every sweepstakes casino runs on two separate currencies, and understanding the split is the whole trick to understanding the model.

• Gold Coins (GC) are the play-money currency. You can win them, lose them, buy more of them, or get them free — but they never convert to cash. They exist purely so you can play the games.
• Sweeps Coins (SC) are the prize currency. You earn or receive them separately from Gold Coins, play with them the same way you’d play with Gold Coins, and — once you clear a site’s minimum and verify your identity — you can redeem them for cash.

Most welcome offers bundle a large stack of Gold Coins with a small handful of free Sweeps Coins (something like “100,000 GC + 2 free SC”). The Gold Coins are there so you can try the site properly; the Sweeps Coins are there so you can win something real without paying for it.

2. Why the model is legal

Sweepstakes casinos aren’t licensed gambling operators — they operate under the same legal framework as a fast-food chain’s “win a free trip” promotion. That framework has one non-negotiable rule: no purchase can ever be necessary to enter or win.

In practice, that means every operator has to offer what’s called an alternate method of entry (AMOE) — a way to receive Sweeps Coins without buying anything. Usually that’s a free daily login claim, a mail-in request, or both. As long as that free path exists and actually works, buying a Gold Coin package (which comes bundled with bonus SC) is treated as a purchase of the play-money product, not a wager on the SC prize.

3. How to get Sweeps Coins for free

Because a free entry path is legally required, every dual-currency casino offers at least one of these:

• Mail-in request. Hand-write a short sweepstakes statement on an index card (or complete an online entry form, depending on the operator), mail or submit it, and the operator credits you SC per accepted request. 4. Buying coin packages (optional)

If you want to play more Gold Coins than the free allotment gives you, operators sell coin packages — a set amount of Gold Coins for a dollar price, usually with bonus Sweeps Coins thrown in on top. This is never required to play or to redeem; it’s simply the faster way to top up.

5. Redemption: minimums, KYC and timing

Once you’ve built up a Sweeps Coin balance from play, redeeming it for cash usually involves three things:

• A clear, working free-entry path. If a site buries or hides its no-purchase route, that’s a red flag regardless of how good the welcome offer looks.
